Happy New Year
Welcome to our very first official, monthly e-newsletter in 2011! May the new year lead us all to harmony, optimism, perseverance and boundless opportunities in creating a better world for our next generations to come.
Our team at Learning Bee have been working relentlessly in planning another year worth of exciting and engaging learning experience for our bees in 2011.
Your patience in awaiting for the "grand opening" of our expanded hive is much appreciated. After months of delay in constructions and endless inspections and reviewing of our floor plan with city officials from Fremont City Planning, we are now awaiting for the final permit from the Fire Department contingent to the completion on the upgraded fire alarm system as per our very last inspection in mid-December 2010 before the mandatory furlow for Fremont city employees during our winter break. Expected official move in date will probably be early February.
In this newsletter, we are sharing with you more exciting news regarding our recent nomination as "Best of the Bay Tutoring Business" as featured on KRON4 TV channel, new series of academic enrichment courses starting Winter 2011 and our completely revamped, better than ever "2011 Universal Kid Summer Camp" for youngsters entering Kindergarten through 6th Grade along with a whole new series of individual classes and workshops for students entering middle school levels.

Learning Bee was featured on "Best of the Bay" show on KRON 4
(January 18, 2011)

It is our greatest honor to be invited by Best of the Bay production on KRON 4 TV to participate in the nomination for 2011 Best Tutoring Business in the Bay Area.
After months of consideration upon our initial contact by the show back in late September 2010, we graciously accepted this honorable nomination in such an elite category in early November 2010. TV Production crews were onsite on December 7, 2010 at our facility filming our routine operation and conducted in person interviews with Mrs. Grace Wong, our Program Director and Mrs. Anita Balaraman, one of our many supportive clients since we first opened up our Fremont campus back in 2006!
Our segment was featured and aired on the show at 12:30pm on Tuesday, January 18 on KRON 4. Next airing of our segment is scheduled for Sunday, January 30th, 8:30pm and Sunday, February 13th, 8:30pm.
For those of you who would like to submit your vote in this nomination for Learning Bee, you can also watch our video clip and all Q&A regarding Learning Bee on Best of the Bay TV website. Please use this link below and spread the words for us:
This is a year-long nomination process. We hope to earn your official vote on the website for this honorable nomination.

What's your Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
by Ms. Sara Saeed, 2nd Grade Teacher

Emotional Intelligence is a relatively recent behavioral model; a form of social intelligence linking strongly to the multiple intelligence theory and the concept of bringing compassion and humanity to work. There are two aspects of EQ. The first is understanding yourself; your intentions; your emotions, goals, and responses. The second aspect is being able to understand others, and their feelings. All of this starts with being able to recognize your emotions as they happen. Research shows that our ability to handle a variety of social situations and control impulses and emotions is four times more important than intellect in terms of building a successful work life. While intellect helps you get the job, emotional intelligence helps you keep it. Daniel Goleman introduced the dimensions of EQ in his book, "Emotional Intelligence". Goleman focuses on cultivating work relationships and advancing professionally. More recent studies have shown that children who are emotionally intelligent have a variety of social skills that can help them to succeed academically, as well as socially.
Recently, we have started to introduce the concepts of emotional intelligence here at Learning Bee via formal class discussion and project activities. Our 1st Graders have started learning about different emotions, identifying when these emotions occur, and how to use this information to guide their actions.
Here are some ways that you can facilitate emotional intelligence at home:
· Help your child identify his or her feelings. Try not to let them push down these feelings; talk about it!
· Frame interactions with your child positively. When you are correcting them, discuss, don't yell. Your child is learning how to interact with others and when you yell at them, you are teaching them that yelling helps to get their point across.
· Give your child specific, supportive feedback about their interactions with others. Identify the other person's feelings and make it clear that you noticed what your child did to help the situation. For instance, you can say something like, "I noticed how you helped your sister when she was feeling frustrated. I was impressed at how patient you were being."
Emotional and social intelligence makes the difference between a highly effective leader and an average one. This year, we will be facilitating a variety of activities promoting emotional and social awareness in the students at Learning Bee. For the younger grades, we'll be focusing on exploring emotions through art, music, writing, and classroom discussions. The activities we have planned for some of the older kids focus on helping them gain insight to their goals and aspirations, while opening up discussions about leadership and goal-setting.
For more information on promoting emotional intelligence learning at home, check out Daniel Goleman and Linda Lantieri's book Building Emotional Intelligence: Techniques to Cultivate Inner Strength in Children

Congratulations to
The RoboBee
RoboBee, buzzing free...
Congratulations to to our rookie Lego Robotics team "The RoboBee" on winning the "Judges Award" at the Castro Valley Qualifier Tournament 2010, one of the many First Lego League (FLL) tournaments in the bay area back in November 2010!
Special thanks to our two young and dedicated coaches, Mr. Jaemin & Mr. Kevin, for taking on this young group of highly energetic and vivacious 4th Graders, giving them the experience of living as a young robotic team!
Our team is comprised of 6 boys and 1 girl, all 4th Graders from local schools. They worked tirelessly for 5 consecutive weeks in preparing for their first FLL competition.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to the team's supportive parents throughout the entire journey.
On the tournament day on November 20th, it was filled with laughter, excitement, anxiety, disappointment and then came along hope! Truly an emotional roller coaster ride for the entire team. At the end of the day, what matter most was that we all shared this unique experience together with our kids.
Our Lego Robotics team will resume their work again in February 2011 to continue this wonderful learning experience under the guidance of the two coaches to continue on their learning journey.
Details on the new set of Lego Robotics classes (for G2 & Up) in Winter & Spring 2011 will be posted on our website shortly.
FLL JUDGES' AWARD: During the course of the competition, the judges may encounter a team whose unique efforts, performance, or dynamics merit recognition. Some teams have a story that sets them apart in a unique way. Sometimes a team is so close to winning an award that the judges choose to give special recognition to them. This award gives the judges the freedom to recognize the most remarkable teams for which a standard award does not exist.
